Bitcoin hardware wallet manufacturer Coinkite has officially launched the Coldcard Q1, a new higher-end signing device that integrates a full QWERTY keyboard and a built-in QR code scanner. The battery-powered unit operates independently of a desktop or power source, using the same proven security model as the Coldcard Mk4 while offering enhanced usability.
Key Features and Design Enhancements
The Coldcard Q1 boasts a 320×240 pixel LCD screen, approximately four times larger than the Mk4’s display, providing clearer visibility of transaction details and wallet data. The QWERTY keyboard simplifies the entry of BIP-39 passphrases, and the built-in QR code scanner with LED illumination enables seamless air-gapped data exchange. The device includes two MicroSD slots and near-field communication (NFC) capabilities, with both USB and NFC data paths that can be permanently blocked via a hardware switch, according to Coinkite’s documentation.
True to Coinkite’s air-gapped philosophy, the Q1 runs on three AAA batteries, eliminating any need for a wired connection during signing. All features from the Mk4 are present, but dedicated keys significantly improve workflow. For instance, a dedicated 'QR' key instantly displays values as scannable QR codes, while a 'NFC' key triggers contactless export or import based on context.
Pricing and Market Context
The Coldcard Q1 is available for pre-order at $199.99 per unit on the Coinkite website, compared to $147.94 for the Mk4. Customers paying with Bitcoin receive a 5% discount using the displayed promotional code. The launch follows a wave of new hardware wallets: Ledger unveiled the Stax (designed by iPod creator Tony Fadell) in December 2022, and 1inch Network announced its own hardware wallet plans in January 2023. Coinkite’s Q1 is positioned as a premium alternative for Bitcoin maximalists who prioritize both security and ease of use.
With a new hardware wallet unveiled each month over the past quarter, competition in the Bitcoin cold storage space is intensifying. The Coldcard Q1 aims to differentiate itself through its tactile keyboard, expanded screen, and robust air-gapped design.
