Crypto exchanges are rapidly expanding into perpetual contracts tied to traditional financial assets, with trading activity rising far beyond last year’s levels. According to CoinDesk, citing CoinGecko data, trading volume in traditional-asset perpetuals on crypto exchanges reached $1.32 trillion in the first five months of 2026, well above the $104.21 billion recorded for all of 2025. Monthly volume climbed from $230 million in January 2025 to $347.17 billion in May 2026. The report describes the shift as a form of “reverse bridging”: instead of Wall Street entering crypto through products such as ETFs, custody and funds, crypto venues are bringing exposure to stocks, indexes and commodities into onchain-style trading systems through perpetuals. Coinbase and Binance are also moving toward a “super exchange” model that would combine trading in crypto assets, stocks, commodities and tokenized assets. The report adds that stock perpetuals do not represent ownership of the underlying shares. They are derivatives that track price moves and do not provide shareholder rights or the protections associated with traditional brokerages.

Crypto exchanges are seeing a sharp rise in perpetual contracts tied to traditional financial assets. According to CoinDesk, citing CoinGecko data, trading volume in these products reached $1.32 trillion in the first five months of 2026, far above the $104.21 billion posted in all of 2025.

Volume growth has accelerated

The monthly total rose from $230 million in January 2025 to $347.17 billion in May 2026. As crypto platforms use perpetual contracts to offer exposure to stocks, indexes and commodities, the sector is developing what the report calls a “reverse bridging” trend.

The direction has changed. In the past, Wall Street entered crypto through ETFs, custody services and funds. Now crypto exchanges are bringing traditional financial assets into blockchain-based trading systems.

Platforms are building a “super exchange” model

Coinbase, Binance and other crypto platforms are also building toward a “super exchange” model, with plans to offer trading in crypto assets, stocks, commodities and tokenized assets.

Stock perpetuals are not the same as owning shares

The report notes that stock perpetual contracts do not represent actual ownership of stocks. They are derivatives that track the price of an asset, and they do not offer shareholder rights or the protections available through traditional brokerages. Industry participants see round-the-clock trading, global access and lower trading friction as key reasons these products appeal to institutions and retail traders outside the US.
