Adam Iza, a cryptocurrency executive from California, pleaded guilty on Monday to orchestrating an attempted kidnapping of Veer Chetal's parents. The plot was directly connected to a massive bitcoin theft involving Chetal, underlining the violent extremes to which some in the crypto world will go to seize illicit gains.
4,100 Bitcoins Stolen Through Impersonation of Tech Support
Veer Chetal, along with two accomplices, impersonated technical support staff from Google and well-known cryptocurrency exchanges to deceive residents of Washington state. The group managed to steal 4,100 bitcoins, which at the time were worth approximately $245 million. The scheme relied on the victims' trust in established tech platforms, enabling the criminals to remotely drain their digital assets.
Iza, 25, also known as Ahmed Faiq, had previously run a crypto trading company called Zort and reportedly referred to himself as the 'Godfather'. When he learned that Chetal and his associates were holding the stolen cryptocurrency, Iza conspired with others to kidnap Chetal's parents. The plan was to use the parents as leverage to force Chetal to share a portion of the proceeds — an attempt that was ultimately unsuccessful, leading to the kidnapping charges against Iza.
Separate Meta Fraud Exceeds $37 Million
In addition to the kidnapping and bitcoin theft-related offenses, Iza admitted to a separate financial fraud. Between 2020 and 2022, he gained fraudulent access to Meta's business manager accounts and credit lines, siphoning off more than $37 million. This independent scheme highlights a pattern of high-tech financial crimes stretching over years.
Federal prosecutors have indicated that they will seek a prison sentence of at least 14 years for Iza, given the gravity of his multiple felonies. While the final sentence awaits a judge's decision, the recommended term reflects a determined effort by authorities to crack down on violent and fraudulent conduct in the digital asset space. The case against Iza continues, with legal proceedings for Chetal and other codefendants also advancing.
