Adam Iza, the 25-year-old founder of crypto trading firm Zort, who called himself "The Godfather," pleaded guilty on Monday to plotting the attempted kidnapping of the parents of Veer Chetal. The plot is directly tied to Chetal's involvement in a massive Bitcoin heist—stealing 4,100 Bitcoins, worth approximately $245 million at the time, alongside two accomplices by posing as tech support from Google and various crypto exchanges.
The 4,100 Bitcoin Theft
According to court documents, Chetal and his co-conspirators tricked Washington state residents into handing over access to their crypto wallets, absconding with the huge stash. The crime became a landmark case in crypto fraud due to its scale and sophisticated impersonation tactics. Iza's goal was to hijack the parents in order to force Chetal to share a portion of the stolen proceeds.
Meta Fraud and Sentencing
Beyond the kidnapping scheme, Iza admitted to stealing more than $37 million between 2020 and 2022 by fraudulently accessing Meta's business manager accounts and credit lines. This cross-platform fraud spree adds another layer to his criminal enterprise. Federal prosecutors are now seeking a sentence of at least 14 years in prison, citing the severity and multifaceted nature of the offenses. The case underscores the growing intersection of violent crime and digital asset theft, and the determined push by authorities to hold perpetrators accountable.
