Joe McCann, the founder of crypto investment firm Asymmetric, is being investigated by authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, following the death of his fiancée, U.S. influencer Ashly Robinson, during a trip to the island.
Robinson, 31, a Miami-based lifestyle creator also known as Ashlee Jenae, was found unresponsive on April 9 in a private villa at Zuri Zanzibar resort, where the couple had been celebrating her birthday and recent engagement. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Zanzibar police told NBC News they believed Robinson died by suicide after a “misunderstanding” between the couple. Police confirmed the pair had a heated argument and were separated twice by hotel staff. However, the investigation remains open, and authorities have withheld McCann's passport, demanding he stay in the country until forensic results from the autopsy are received.
Family disputes suicide theory, launches fundraiser
Robinson's family expressed strong doubts about the suicide ruling. They set up a GoFundMe campaign seeking $50,000 to cover travel, funeral and other unexpected expenses, and have already raised more than the target.
Zuri Zanzibar said in a statement it was “deeply saddened” and is cooperating fully with local police and the U.S. Embassy.
McCann: From crypto star to fund closure
McCann, with an estimated net worth of $45 million, is a prominent figure in institutional crypto. Asymmetric counts Andreessen Horowitz co-founders Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon among its investors.
But his fund business has been under pressure. In December 2025, McCann announced he would shut down Asymmetric’s Liquid Alpha Fund after unconfirmed social media chatter that the fund was down 78% for the year. He hasn't confirmed the exact loss but has initiated the wind-down.
Police silent; U.S. State Department offers condolences
CoinDesk called Zanzibar police several times but staff immediately hung up. The Tanzania Police Force also did not respond to an email request.
The U.S. State Department declined further comment, citing privacy considerations, and referred questions to local authorities. “We offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Ms. Robinson,” a spokesperson said, adding that the Trump administration’s highest priority remains the safety of Americans.
McCann has not yet issued a public statement.
