CryptoQuant Founder: Self-Custody Isn't Always the Safest Choice

News EditorCryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju pushed back on "not your keys, not your coins" in an X post, saying it doesn't apply to most people. He compared home safes to bank vaults, noting that lack of expertise makes home storage merely a labeled box. Self-custody also removes any party to blame when problems arise, which is why many still avoid DEXs. The safest option, he said, is what users can actually handle.
CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju took to X to challenge the familiar crypto mantra "not your keys, not your coins," arguing that it simply doesn't apply to most people.
He drew an analogy with gold: even when banks were robbed weekly, people still kept their gold there, because a home safe without professional expertise is not real security—it's just a box with a label. Even if everyone learned self-custody, it wouldn't necessarily win out. When problems arise, people need someone to hold accountable, and self-custody can't offer that. That's also why not everyone uses DEXs.
His conclusion: self-custody isn't the safest option. The safest option is the one users can actually handle.
