Changpeng Zhao said Hong Kong holds clear competitive strengths in Web3 finance despite weaker power and data center infrastructure, citing its financial talent pool, cross-border talent mobility with mainland China, and institutional connectivity. Speaking at a book event for "Binance: My Story" in Hong Kong, Zhao said the current AI boom will not derail Web3’s long-term trajectory. He said he remains optimistic about Hong Kong, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE, as well as the United States after its policy shift. Zhao also said real-world asset tokenization has progressed faster than he had previously expected. In particular, he pointed to tokenized securities as a way to reduce account-opening barriers, extend access beyond limited trading hours, remove geographic constraints, and improve global accessibility and liquidity. He added that stablecoins are essentially a form of RWA in which fiat currency is brought on-chain. On decentralized exchanges, Zhao said infrastructure and user understanding have become much more mature, while U.S. regulatory pressure on decentralized products has eased compared with the past.
Changpeng Zhao said Hong Kong has clear Web3 finance competitiveness, even though its power supply and data center infrastructure are not especially strong.
Speaking at a "Binance: My Story" book event in Hong Kong, Zhao said the city’s advantages come from its position as a financial center, its fintech talent base, talent mobility connected to mainland China, and institutional connectivity.
He said the current popularity of AI will not block Web3’s long-term development. Zhao added that he is positive on Hong Kong, Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and the United States after its policy shift.
On real-world assets, or RWA, Zhao said development in the sector has moved faster than he previously expected. He said tokenized securities in particular could break through barriers tied to account opening, trading hours, and geography, while improving global accessibility and liquidity.
Zhao also said stablecoins are, in essence, a type of RWA that puts fiat currency on-chain.
Discussing decentralized exchanges, or DEXs, he said both infrastructure and user awareness have become noticeably more mature. He also said U.S. regulatory pressure on decentralized products has eased compared with the past. If the policy environment keeps loosening, Zhao said growth in DEXs and the broader crypto industry could accelerate markedly over the next few years.
