XRP funding rates on Binance have dropped into extreme negative territory, and Cryptoquant says that setup has often appeared before short squeezes and quick rebounds in the token. In its March 5 analysis, the firm said XRP was trading between $1.35 and $1.50 while derivatives positioning showed heavily bearish sentiment.

Negative funding points to crowded short exposure

According to Cryptoquant, XRP had already gone through an overall correction of about 60%, yet most traders in the derivatives market were still positioned on the short side. In perpetual futures, funding rates are recurring payments between longs and shorts designed to keep contract prices aligned with the spot market. When funding turns sharply negative, it usually means short sellers are dominant and paying to maintain those positions.

That matters because such imbalances can set up a short squeeze. If XRP starts moving higher, losses on short positions can build fast, pushing traders to close out and buy back the asset. That wave of forced buying can add to upside momentum in a short period. Cryptoquant said historical data on Binance shows that episodes of deeply negative funding in XRP have often been followed by short-term rebounds or corrective rallies.

Chart data tracks repeated signals from 2024 into early March

The chart published with the analysis compares XRP price action with Binance funding rates from mid-2024 through early March. Over that span, funding moved between positive readings and deeply negative levels. XRP rose from below $1 in mid-2024 to above $3 later in the year, then moved back toward the $1.50 area.

Several clusters of extreme negative funding appeared on the chart in early 2025 and again in early March. Those periods were marked with blue signal indicators and, according to the analysis, historically lined up with short-term recoveries in XRP. Cryptoquant added that when market consensus becomes too concentrated in one direction, price action has often moved against the majority.

The setup is constructive, not a guarantee

Cryptoquant did not describe the signal as proof of a lasting trend reversal. The firm said it should instead be viewed as a constructive market condition that some investors may use when looking for possible entry zones or when building exposure gradually. The main takeaway from the data is centered on derivatives positioning: bearish bets on Binance have become unusually crowded, and that has previously opened the door to fast counter-moves in XRP.
