David Heinemeier Hansson, known as DHH, has announced the creation of the nonprofit Omacom Foundation with a total of $8 million in initial funding. Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and co-founder of 37signals, said the foundation is meant to provide long-term support for infrastructure related to Omarchy and for open-source development tied to the project, as part of his vision for a “malleable computer of the future.”
The foundation will hold the relevant trademarks, pay for infrastructure costs, and support the dependent open-source projects and developers behind the broader Omarchy stack.
Eight initial donors contributed $1 million each
The first funding round came from eight donors, each contributing $1 million. They are Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Block Chairman Jack Dorsey, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, 37signals CEO Jason Fried, and DHH himself.
Exclusive sponsorship deal with Hyprland
Omacom Foundation will become the exclusive sponsor of Hyprland under a three-year sponsorship agreement, with an option to extend the arrangement for another two years. The sponsorship is expected to allow Hyprland founder Vaxry to focus on development work without having to think about commercial development or fundraising.
The foundation will assume the sponsorship from Oct. 10. At that point, the existing paid Hyprperks subscription will end, and the related services will be opened for free, though the project will continue to accept individual donations.
What Omarchy is
Omarchy is a Linux environment created by DHH based on Arch Linux and Hyprland. Its goal is not to rebuild Linux from scratch, but to package a heavily customized Linux desktop into a more complete system with a distinct personal aesthetic and workflow preference.
