An Ethereum ICO wallet that remained untouched for nearly ten years suddenly transferred 2,000 ETH, valued at approximately $6.8 million. This is the address's first transaction since 2015, sparking interest in dormant whale movements.

On Saturday, an address that participated in Ethereum’s Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2014 came to life after nearly a decade, moving 2,000 ETH worth approximately $6.8 million. This marks the first transaction from this wallet since it was created in 2015, as detected by on-chain monitoring platform Whale Alert.

ICO Whale Awakens: From $0.31 to $3,400

Ethereum’s ICO launched on July 22, 2014, with 7 million ETH sold in the first 12 hours at a rate of 2,000 ETH per 1 BTC. With Bitcoin priced at $621 at the time, each ETH cost roughly $0.31. The wallet involved in Saturday's transfer was created on July 30, 2015, when ETH had already risen to $2.92, but the holder chose to keep the tokens.

Now, the same 2,000 ETH stash is worth $6.8 million, a gain of over 10,900x from the ICO cost. On-chain data shows the funds were first split into several intermediate addresses before being consolidated.

Ethereum ICO History: 2.2M ETH Still Unclaimed

The Ethereum ICO distributed approximately 72 million ETH to 8,893 participants. As of March 2024, approximately 2.2 million ETH (worth about $7.5 billion) remains unclaimed in genesis addresses. Over the past nine years, roughly 69.7 million genesis ETH has been gradually moved, including a notable case in 2017 where one address transferred 40,000 ETH from the ICO.

Some participants sold during the 2017 bull run, while others held until 2021 or the current market cycle. Similarly, numerous long-dormant Bitcoin addresses have been reactivated this month, driven by BTC’s price appreciation.

Market Interpretation

Analysts note that such “whale awakening” events do not directly move markets but often trigger speculation about unlocked historical holdings. If a large number of genesis addresses were to move simultaneously, it could create short-term supply pressure on ETH. However, so far, this appears to be an isolated case.

The community is curious about the purpose of this transfer: is it preparing to sell, or simply reorganizing addresses? As of press time, no clear clues have emerged. On-chain data will continue to track the fund flows.
