El Salvador continues to make headlines in the crypto world with three significant developments: a zero-debt budget announcement, a Bitcoin-based coffee trade, and the expansion of Lightning Network infrastructure into Latin America.

Bukele Declares Self-Financed 2025 Budget

President Nayib Bukele, in a speech marking El Salvador's Independence Day, revealed that the country's 2025 budget will be fully self-financed with zero debt issuance for current expenditures. “I announce that on September 30 we will present to the Legislative Assembly, for the first time in decades, the first fully financed budget, without the need to issue a single cent of debt for current expenses,” Bukele said. He stressed that even interest payments on existing debt would be covered from self-obtained funds, breaking the cycle of borrowing to service previous loans. This move aligns with Bukele’s broader economic strategy for his second term, focusing on fiscal discipline and reduced reliance on external financing.

Bitcoin Settles Salvadoran Coffee Purchase

A notable milestone in real-world Bitcoin adoption occurred when U.S.-based Compass Coffee completed a purchase of Salvadoran coffee using Bitcoin. The transaction bypassed traditional intermediaries, allowing producers to receive fair market prices. According to El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deal demonstrated Bitcoin’s utility for cross-border commodity settlements. Ambassador to the U.S., Milena Mayorga, highlighted that producers got competitive rates without third-party deductions. Salvadoran coffee grower Jorge Cruz said the price received was two to three times higher than the quoted U.S. market price. Mayorga also emphasized that any company operating in El Salvador can use Bitcoin for such settlements, signaling further integration of the cryptocurrency into the national economy.

This coffee trade represents a concrete use case for Bitcoin beyond speculation, directly benefiting local producers and showcasing the efficiency of peer-to-peer digital payments in international trade.

Lightspark Eyes LatAm as Key Market

Lighting Network-focused financial services firm Lightspark is setting its sights on Latin America, aiming to solve the region’s cross-border payment challenges. The company builds infrastructure that allows other businesses to easily integrate Lightning Network capabilities, making Bitcoin transactions faster and cheaper. Nicolas Cabrera, Lightspark’s VP of Product, expects the company’s rails to reach 250 million users within the next year through partners like Coinbase, Bitso, and Nubank. Cabrera described Latin America as Lightspark’s most important market, citing the region’s openness to decentralized finance solutions compared to other parts of the world. The region suffers from high remittance costs and slow banking transfers, making Lightning Network an attractive alternative for both individuals and businesses.

Lightspark’s expansion could accelerate Bitcoin adoption in Latin America, providing a scalable layer for instant payments and lowering barriers for unbanked populations. The company’s presence is expected to complement El Salvador’s existing Bitcoin infrastructure, creating a more robust ecosystem across the region.
