Ethereum Foundation and the Open Anonymity Project launched zkAPI on the Ethereum mainnet on Oct. 1, according to an Odaily report citing Bitcoin.com News. The system is designed for users who want to pre-fund balances in assets such as ETH and USDC, then use those balances to pay for AI products and other metered services without directly tying billing identity to individual requests. After depositing funds, users can authorize payments through zero-knowledge proofs and one-time API keys. Once the server verifies a payment proof, it issues a short-lived key with a spending limit. That setup allows AI providers to receive prompts while not learning the identity tied to the payment. The report also notes the system’s limits. zkAPI does not hide prompt content, meaning service providers can still read both prompts and responses. It also does not remove metadata risks: stable IP addresses, timing patterns, and repeated behavior may still be used to link activity back to a user. The project’s code repository currently labels zkAPI as experimental.

The system lets users pre-fund balances in assets including ETH and USDC, then use those balances to pay for AI services and other metered products while separating billing identity from the request itself.
After funds are deposited, users can authorize payments with zero-knowledge proofs and one-time API keys. Once the server verifies a payment proof, it generates a short-lived key with a preset spending cap.
That process allows AI service providers to receive prompts without learning the identity associated with the payment.
zkAPI does not conceal prompt content, however. AI providers can still read prompts and responses, and the report said stable IP addresses, timing patterns, and repeated behavior may still be used to connect activity to a user’s identity.
The project’s code repository labels zkAPI as an experimental project.
