Ethereum developers have laid out a multi-year consensus roadmap aimed at shrinking today’s 12-second slot time and cutting finality from roughly 16 minutes to as little as 6 to 16 seconds. The plan was shared publicly in early 2026 and involves Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin together with researchers at the Ethereum Foundation.
Slot reductions are planned in stages, not all at once
Buterin said the network would move carefully instead of jumping straight to very short slots. The current 12-second slot could be reduced to 8 seconds, then 6, then 4 seconds. A move to 3 or 2 seconds is still under research review. Developers also said most items on the roadmap do not depend on shorter slots, so slot cuts would come only after network stability improves. The approach mirrors how Ethereum previously adjusted data blob targets.
Peer-to-peer redesign is meant to reduce propagation delay
Faster slots require faster networking, and the roadmap ties that goal to changes in Ethereum’s communication layer. Researchers described a redesigned peer-to-peer system using erasure coding to lower latency. Blocks would be split into fragments so nodes can reconstruct data more quickly. Testing, according to the proposal, showed better propagation without adding security risk.
Finality logic would evolve separately from slot production
Another major part of the plan is to separate slot production from finality logic so both can improve on different timelines. Ethereum’s current Gasper system reaches finality in about 16 minutes on average. Buterin said developers want to move toward a one-round BFT-style finality method. Under that design, finality could fall to 6 to 16 seconds. Before that, the roadmap points to intermediate steps such as one-epoch finality and shorter epochs.
Attester changes are proposed to offset tighter latency margins
Some planned features make timing more difficult. The roadmap notes that ePBS and FOCIL reduce safe latency margins, which puts more pressure on the system as other components speed up. To compensate, researchers proposed limiting each slot to 256 to 1,024 randomly selected attesters. That change would remove delays tied to signature aggregation and shorten part of the confirmation path.
Justin Drake’s Strawmap stretches across seven forks to 2029
The broader roadmap appears in a working document called Strawmap, introduced by researcher Justin Drake. It spans seven forks through 2029, with updates expected every six months. The document lists five long-term goals, including fast finality, higher throughput, and post-quantum security. Some future forks already have finalized names, including Glamsterdam and Hegotá.
Post-quantum protections may arrive in separate phases
The cryptography transition may not happen all at once. Buterin said slot production could become quantum-resistant before finality does, which means block production could continue even if finality weakens for a period. Developers also stressed that the Strawmap is still a working document. It reflects coordination across researchers and builders, not a fixed outcome.
