London-based AI recruitment startup Ethos has raised $22.75 million in Series A funding, with the round led by a16z and additional backing from General Catalyst. The company is building a hiring platform designed to help employers assess talent based on demonstrable work rather than relying primarily on traditional resumes.
Evaluating candidates through real output
Ethos uses AI to analyze a candidate’s academic work, code, and other professional output in order to create a more detailed skills profile. Those profiles are then connected to paid opportunities, including consulting work, market research engagements, and full-time jobs.
The model addresses a growing challenge in recruiting: as AI tools become more widespread, employers face increasing difficulty separating genuine experience from embellished, fraudulent, or AI-generated resumes. Co-founder and CEO James Lo said the platform aims to represent people’s capabilities more accurately while helping companies identify real talent in a noisier hiring environment.
Investor interest in hiring infrastructure remains strong
The participation of a16z and General Catalyst highlights continued investor appetite for AI-powered hiring infrastructure. Rather than functioning as a simple job marketplace, Ethos is positioning itself around skills verification and better matching through deeper analysis of what candidates have actually produced.
As companies look for more efficient and reliable recruiting processes, tools focused on talent verification, candidate matching, and fraud reduction are becoming an important segment of the broader AI startup landscape. Ethos’s latest funding suggests investors still see strong potential in platforms that can improve trust and precision in hiring.
