The Financial Accounting Standards Board has released a proposed Accounting Standards Update that would clarify how the definition of cash equivalents under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles applies to certain digital assets, including stablecoins. The proposal uses illustrative examples to guide companies in presenting qualifying digital assets as cash equivalents in a more consistent and comparable way, while leaving the existing definition of cash equivalents unchanged. It also introduces a broader disclosure requirement for all entities that classify assets as cash equivalents, requiring them to disclose the significant components and amounts of those balances whether digital assets are included or not. FASB is accepting public comments on the proposal through Nov. 19, 2026.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board, or FASB, has issued a proposed Accounting Standards Update to clarify how the definition of cash equivalents under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or GAAP, applies to certain digital assets such as stablecoins.

According to the proposal, FASB would use illustrative examples to guide companies in presenting qualifying digital assets as cash equivalents with greater consistency and comparability. The board said the proposal would not change the existing definition of cash equivalents.

The proposed ASU would also require all companies that present assets as cash equivalents to disclose the significant components and amounts of those balances, regardless of whether digital assets are included.

FASB is inviting comments on the proposal through Nov. 19, 2026.
