Former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke has joined the Anthropic Long Term Benefit Trust, becoming one of four members in the company’s long-term oversight structure. Anthropic created the Trust to help ensure that advanced artificial intelligence is developed for the long-term benefit of humanity. The body can appoint members to Anthropic’s board and advise company leadership on decisions tied to the societal effects of AI technologies.

Bernanke takes a seat in Anthropic’s oversight structure

Anthropic said Bernanke’s background in managing financial crises and steering the U.S. economy through turbulent periods could help the company assess how AI may affect labor markets and the broader economy. The company is widely seen as one of the leading names in generative AI, alongside OpenAI and rivals backed by Google.

Bernanke said the potential of artificial intelligence is immense, but the range of possible outcomes is also vast, and how that potential develops will depend in part on the institutions built around it. The other Trust members are social entrepreneur Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, who worked in national security during the George W. Bush era, and Mariano Florentino Cuellar, a former intelligence adviser to President Joe Biden.

Appointment lands during debate over AI valuations

The move comes as investors and economists continue to argue over whether heavy capital inflows into AI companies resemble earlier market bubbles. Some have warned that sharply rising valuations across the sector may point to excessive pricing. The concern is growing.

Earlier this year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that as OpenAI and Anthropic move closer to potential public offerings, Nvidia had effectively finished its major wave of investments in such ventures. That view added momentum to a broader debate over how durable AI company valuations may be over time.

Anthropic recently faced export restrictions

The announcement also follows a period of friction between Anthropic and the Trump administration. Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce temporarily restricted exports involving the company’s latest AI models. Those restrictions were later reversed after Anthropic added extra safeguards and reached an agreement with U.S. authorities.

Anthropic said Bernanke’s experience in economic policymaking, especially during crisis periods, should add perspective as the company evaluates the social and economic consequences of advanced AI systems. Bernanke served as Fed chair from 2006 to 2014 and led the U.S. central bank during the 2008 global financial crisis. His record remains debated: some economists say his actions helped prevent a deeper collapse, while critics argue that risks building before the crisis were not addressed and that decisions involving banks such as Lehman Brothers remain contested.

In 2022, Bernanke received the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on banks and financial crises.
