Strategy's Funding Model Triggers Market Trust Crisis
Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz has identified the root cause of Bitcoin's recent decline: a collapse in confidence in Strategy's (formerly MicroStrategy) funding model. As the largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy's stock and preferred securities have become key indicators of Bitcoin market risk. The company's long-standing flywheel strategy—issuing shares at a premium to buy more Bitcoin—is now under severe strain. Strategy's stock has traded below the value of its Bitcoin holdings, signaling that the model is breaking down. Novogratz noted that STRC trading is weak and should be around $100 per share.
More concerning, Strategy's annual dividend obligations have risen to approximately $1.2 billion, and its cash reserves have dwindled to cover only about 14 months of dividends. This means if Bitcoin prices do not recover quickly, Strategy could face funding difficulties. Novogratz emphasized that this is no longer just a company-specific issue but has become a barometer of overall Bitcoin market confidence.
Macro Headwinds: Strong Dollar Weighs on Bitcoin
On the macro front, Bitcoin faces additional pressure from a strengthening U.S. dollar. Novogratz summarized the current market logic as 'strong dollar means weak Bitcoin.' Hawkish central bank signals and a robust dollar are suppressing demand for risk assets, and Bitcoin is not immune. Technically, the $59,000–$60,000 range has become a critical support zone. If broken, a decline toward $45,000 could be on the cards. Novogratz admitted that the situation is complex, with a roughly 50/50 probability of a rebound versus a deeper correction.
Fragile Sentiment and Cautious Derivatives Signals
ETF outflows, weak liquidity, and cautious positioning in the options market further underscore the fragile sentiment. Traders are predominantly bearish, with put options gaining relative to calls as investors hedge against downside risks. Bitcoin has faced nine consecutive days of spot ETF net outflows totaling over $1 billion, data shows. Novogratz noted that Strategy's balance sheet health, STRC price performance, and cash position have become key signals for Bitcoin market confidence. The market now awaits fresh catalysts to break out of the current malaise.
