David Liberman, co-founder of Gonka Protocol, recently appeared on the Bitcoin.com News Podcast to discuss the future of decentralized AI computing. He argued that the current AI compute market is dominated by centralized cloud services, leading to inefficiencies and high barriers to entry. Inspired by Bitcoin's ability to build massive decentralized infrastructure, Gonka aims to create a global, transformer-based Proof-of-Work (PoW) network that efficiently aggregates idle GPU resources worldwide, primarily for AI inference workloads.

PoW Network: A Better Incentive Model

Liberman explained that compared to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks, PoW better aligns incentives with hardware providers. Under PoW, token value is directly linked to the real cost of compute, preventing artificial inflation and fostering a healthier ecosystem. Gonka's network focuses on inference over training, as inference demand is more continuous and decentralized, making it more suitable for a distributed architecture. He emphasized that as AI applications proliferate, specialized ASIC chips will rapidly improve power efficiency, much like Bitcoin mining rigs, and Gonka's tokenomics are designed to prioritize rewarding hardware innovators and providers.

AI Valuation Bubble and Long-Term Potential

Liberman commented on the current AI market, stating that some company valuations "might be in a bubble," reminiscent of the dot-com era. However, AI's long-term transformative impact is undeniable. The problem is that overheated capital may distort healthy technological and business model development. Decentralized compute networks can support real demand through market-based pricing of computing power, avoiding resource misallocation.

Decentralized AI: Global Competition and Individual Autonomy

Liberman emphasized that distributed computing systems are essential for smaller nations and startups. Given the dominance of centralized AI giants in compute resources, only decentralized networks can level the playing field. He called for billions of independent, decentralized AI agents to prevent excessive concentration of wealth and power, ensuring a future of abundance.

David Liberman co-founded Gonka with his brother Daniil Liberman. Previously, they co-founded Frank Money, Kernel AR (acquired by Snap), and signed the Founders Pledge, channeling their economic output into Libermans Co., now valued at $400 million with investments from Marc Andreessen, Josh Kushner, and Arielle Zuckerberg.
