The AI arms race just escalated to a new price level. Bloomberg reports that Google parent Alphabet is plotting a massive $40 billion investment in Anthropic, the startup behind the Claude large language model. The deal starts with a $10 billion cash injection in the first tranche, valuing Anthropic at roughly $350 billion — in line with its February 2026 valuation.
Two-Stage Structure: Upfront Cash Plus Performance Milestones
The financing comes in two phases with a clear performance-driven clause. The initial $10 billion is straight equity. If Anthropic hits specific model performance or technical targets, Alphabet can add up to $30 billion more. This “down payment plus earn-out” structure gives Google both a strong foothold and an option to scale up based on Anthropic’s progress, a relatively unusual approach in large AI investments.
Compute Is Power: TPU Expansion at the Core
Nearly all of the new capital will flow into compute infrastructure. Anthropic will dramatically scale its procurement and deployment of Google Cloud TPUs. The two companies have long collaborated on cloud services and custom AI chips; this investment deepens that strategic lock-in. Anthropic itself recently announced multi-billion-dollar AI infrastructure buildouts in the U.S., and Google’s funding aligns directly with those plans.
Frenemy Dynamics: Google’s Dual Hedge Against Amazon
The relationship between Google and Anthropic is complex: Anthropic is both a major Google Cloud customer and a direct rival in the race toward artificial general intelligence — Claude vs. Gemini. Given that Anthropic had already received massive backing from Amazon, Google’s move is widely seen as a “multi-bet” strategy: lock in Anthropic’s future compute orders while hedging against the risk that its own AI models fall behind. The deal ensures Google remains indispensable no matter which model emerges on top.
