Google Cloud is pushing Gemini beyond the AI assistant category and toward an enterprise agent model.
On Oct. 8 local time, the company announced Gemini Universal Work Agent at its “Gemini at Work 2026” conference, describing it as a general-purpose AI agent for enterprise work. Google Cloud said the product is built to let users use a single prompt window to directly access internal business information, tools, and systems and complete a range of work tasks.
One interface for Q&A, creation, and coding
Unlike traditional AI assistants that mainly focus on question answering and content generation, Gemini is designed to understand user requests with a company’s full business context. It can then plan tasks on its own, call the needed skills and tools, and connect to customer business systems to execute the work.
Google Cloud said Gemini covers several scenarios, including knowledge work, information queries, content creation, and programming. Instead of switching between different AI tools, users can submit requests through one interface, with Gemini selecting the right capability based on the task type.
Built with enterprise controls
For enterprise deployment, Google Cloud said it has equipped Gemini with enterprise-grade security, management, and governance features. Those controls are intended to meet company requirements around data security, permission management, and oversight of AI usage.
The launch shows Google Cloud is trying to embed Gemini more deeply into day-to-day enterprise workflows, moving it from a standalone generative AI tool to what it calls a “universal work agent” that can understand enterprise context, connect with business systems, and carry out more complex tasks.
