Google has reached a 20-year power purchase agreement with U.S. nuclear operator Constellation Energy to buy 890 MW of added zero-carbon electricity from upgraded nuclear plants, according to ABMedia. The transaction is expected to bring Constellation Energy more than $4.3 billion in new investment and is intended to provide stable baseload power for rising AI data center demand while helping expand supply capacity on the PJM Interconnection grid.
Upgrades at 11 nuclear units
As electricity demand from artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure rises, large technology companies are looking for steady, carbon-free baseload power. Constellation Energy, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker CEG, plans to upgrade 11 nuclear generating units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The work will include turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems to improve generation efficiency.
ABMedia said the project is expected to draw more than $4.3 billion in private capital. The first batch of upgraded power is scheduled to begin operating in 2028, allowing regional grid capacity to expand without waiting years for the construction of a new large power plant.
Structured around PJM’s “Bring Your Own Power” proposal
The agreement also responds directly to PJM Interconnection’s proposed “Bring Your Own Power” framework. Under that approach, large power users would need to secure new electricity supply on their own so they do not face remote curtailments during peak demand periods or pass major grid upgrade costs on to residential customers.
Based on the details cited by ABMedia, the arrangement would add baseload supply to the PJM grid equivalent to one new nuclear reactor. In addition to the 20-year power purchase agreement, Google also signed a 15-year energy supply agreement covering 2,700 MW, providing operating funding support and strengthening grid resilience during periods of heavy load.
Five-year technology partnership with Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise
Beyond the power contract, Constellation Energy will bring in Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise under a five-year technology partnership to deploy what it described as an “energy AI” framework across grid and power plant operations.
ABMedia reported that the system will be used for site selection, power flow simulation, permitting, and interconnection planning to shorten development timelines. It will also support real-time monitoring of asset health and maintenance processes, while using cybersecurity platforms to strengthen operational technology, or OT, network protection and help keep critical infrastructure running safely.
Key points from the agreement
- Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy for 890 MW of added nuclear capacity.
- The project is tied to more than $4.3 billion in private capital and upgrades at 11 nuclear generating units.
- The first upgraded power output is expected to enter service in 2028.
- The structure follows a “Bring Your Own Power” model tied to PJM Interconnection requirements.
- The companies will also work together for five years using Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to improve asset monitoring and cybersecurity.
