Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing will publish a discussion paper in the fourth quarter on a proposal to extend cash market trading hours, according to remarks by Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission CEO Julia Leung. Speaking Friday at an Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association conference, Leung said authorities are studying measures to reform market microstructure, with longer trading hours among the options under review. She said the plan would be introduced first in the derivatives market. Leung said longer hours would help investors respond more quickly to fast-moving global markets that span multiple time zones and help Hong Kong maintain its competitive edge. Over the longer term, she added, the policy could be paired with other measures that may be implemented, including tokenized money and e-HKD settlement arrangements, to give investors more flexibility in adjusting positions and managing risk based on the latest market information.

Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission CEO Julia Leung said Friday that authorities are studying market microstructure reforms, including longer securities trading hours, and would roll out the change first in the derivatives market.

Leung made the remarks at an Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, or ASIFMA, conference. She said the move would help investors respond in a more timely way to fast-changing global markets across different time zones and help Hong Kong maintain its competitive edge.

Discussion paper due in the fourth quarter

Looking further out, Leung said a policy to extend trading hours could be paired with other measures that may be introduced, including tokenized money and e-HKD settlement arrangements. Taken together, those measures would give investors more flexibility to adjust positions and manage risk based on the latest market information.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, or HKEX, will publish a discussion paper in the fourth quarter on extending cash market trading hours and will invite market feedback.
