The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said on Sept. 29 that it had successfully priced digital green bonds worth about HK$20 billion equivalent under its Government Sustainable Bond Programme. The offering covers Hong Kong dollars, renminbi, US dollars, and euros.
Alongside conventional settlement and the tokenized central bank money settlement option used previously, the government said this issuance also introduced tokenized deposits through EnsembleTX in the primary issuance settlement process for the Hong Kong dollar tranche. According to the announcement, this makes the deal the world’s first batch of digital bonds to incorporate tokenized Hong Kong dollar deposits.
The government said the arrangement adds to the city’s digital ecosystem and lays groundwork for exploring the programmability of digital money. The statement did not provide additional issuance details beyond the currencies involved and the total size of the deal.
