Hsinchu City Government has released the results of a government-backed singles mixer jointly organized by Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County and Hsinchu Science Park. The event offered 160 spots and drew nearly 800 applications, which the city described as a selection rate of less than 20%, or roughly one successful draw for every five applicants.
In a news release issued on Oct. 5, the city said the event recorded a 57% successful matching rate and a 92% overall satisfaction rate. It did not disclose how those figures were calculated, and it did not publish the number of matched pairs.
A joint program across Hsinchu, Miaoli and the science park
The "Yuan County City" platform is a cooperative mechanism involving Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County and Hsinchu Science Park. This year marked the second time the singles mixer had been jointly held, with Hsinchu City taking over as organizer.
The latest event took place on Oct. 3 at Lakeshore Hotel Hsinchu and Green Grass Lake. Eligibility was limited to single people aged 22 to 45 who either hold household registration in Hsinchu, Hsinchu County or Miaoli, or work there. The applicant pool included public-sector workers, members of the public and science park employees.
Registration opened at 1 p.m. on Aug. 28. The event itself was free, but each participant had to place a NT$1,000 deposit, refundable after completing the full program.
The Oct. 3 schedule included team AR puzzle-solving activities by Green Grass Lake, stand-up paddleboarding, and mosaic glass handicraft sessions.
Last year’s first edition also drew nearly 800 applications
Hsinchu Mayor Ann Kao said on Aug. 28 that the first edition, hosted last year by Miaoli County, achieved a matching success rate of 60%. That event was held on Feb. 22, 2025, at West Lake Resortopia in Sanyi Township, Miaoli County.
According to the city government’s earlier release, the first edition also attracted nearly 800 applicants, with 160 selected to attend. The event ultimately produced 47 pairs. That equals 94 people, or about 59% of the 160 participants, which matches the official description of "nearly 60%."
By contrast, this year’s release listed only the 57% figure without giving the number of matched pairs. It also did not say whether the denominator was the full 160 participants or another basis.
Marriage and childbirth incentives come with caps
The city said participants would receive gifts and incentive items. Those who matched successfully could receive a dating gift. Those who married within two years could apply for a wedding gift. The first pair to marry within one year would also receive a diamond ring set.
Eligible participants who marry can apply for a NT$60,000 marriage incentive per couple. After marriage, each newborn can qualify for a NT$100,000 childcare incentive. Each of the two incentive categories is capped at six recipients.
The report also addressed claims that having one child in Hsinchu City could bring benefits of up to NT$260,000. It said the city has stated that, starting in 2027, the city’s childbirth subsidy would be NT$60,000 per child, and with NT$100,000 from the central government the total could reach NT$260,000. The article noted that those two items add up to NT$160,000, while republished versions included the NT$100,000 childcare incentive tied to this singles event, which is capped at six recipients.
Government programs continue, private matchmaking is busier still
Separate from the joint event, Hsinchu City Government’s own singles mixers in 2024 and 2025 each offered two sessions, with 80 places in total. Applications rose from 331 to 473, meaning about six people competed for each spot in 2025.
Hsinchu County Government’s Education Bureau has also continued its youth family-building matchmaking series into its fifth year. The program hosted eight sessions last year with more than 400 young participants. This year, five sessions were scheduled with 240 places in total, and the final event is set for Nov. 15.
The article said private-sector events and matchmaking companies in Hsinchu have increasingly focused on mixers marketed around "golden engineers." On average, more than eight such events are held each month. These activities usually target male engineers described as high-income but limited in social circle. Fees are typically higher, but participants can choose among sessions aimed at different profiles and social backgrounds.
Key figures were published, but the calculation was not
The city’s main data points for this year’s joint singles mixer were a 57% successful matching rate and a 92% satisfaction rate. Unlike the first edition, which disclosed the concrete result of 47 matched pairs, this year’s release did not provide the pair count, the sample range, or the calculation method behind the published percentages.
