Hunter Biden is set to launch the meme coin LAPTOP, and some crypto traders are questioning both his background and his motives for issuing the token, according to BlockBeats on Sept. 8.
The report says Biden was convicted in 2024 on three felony gun charges and admitted to nine tax charges. He later received a full pardon from his father, former U.S. President Joe Biden.
Hunter Biden also testified under oath that he owed about $17 million to his former law firm, Winston & Strawn. The firm sued him last year over unpaid legal fees, and his lawyer said in April that he was living overseas and was “unable to pay.” Some traders have tied that financial situation to the timing of the LAPTOP token launch.
Biden previously said he entered the crypto industry because he was interested in the technology and because he “wanted to make some money.”
He has recently spoken in support of the crypto sector several times, saying that “decentralized digital currencies and blockchain are the inevitable future.” When asked for his view on cryptocurrencies, he replied: “Hyperliquid.” He also said he wants to put his artwork on-chain and accept Bitcoin payments. Biden added that Andreas Antonopoulos’ book The Internet of Money had been “eye-opening” for him.
The market performance of LAPTOP after launch remains uncertain. As a comparison, TRUMP has fallen from a high of $74.34 in January 2025 to $2.27, while MELANIA is down 94% to $0.11.
Separately, Hunter Biden recently said he has not decided whether to run in the 2028 U.S. presidential election. He added that if he had the support of billionaire John Catsimatidis, he “might have to run.”
