Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) has entered into a preliminary agreement with Securitize to launch a digital trading platform for the New York Stock Exchange built on blockchain technology. Securitize, as the project's design partner, will focus on reimagining the workflow of transfer agents — institutions that maintain share ownership records — so they can operate seamlessly in a blockchain environment. Backed by BlackRock and Ark Invest, Securitize is already registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as a transfer agent.

Under the arrangement, Securitize is expected to become one of the first entities capable of offering tokenized versions of stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on the new platform. However, launching these digital assets hinges on obtaining the necessary regulatory greenlights.

Traditional Exchanges Accelerate Blockchain Adoption

Once the platform is fully operational, Securitize's brokerage services unit could play a central role in facilitating trades of these digital securities. This would give the company a foothold in both issuance and secondary trading of tokenized assets, potentially reshaping how traditional and digital markets intersect.

Major exchanges — including the NYSE and Nasdaq — have shown surging interest in security tokenization in recent years. Firms are seeking to integrate blockchain into equity markets to offer 24/7 trading and near-instant settlement, bringing the flexibility of crypto markets to traditional finance. ICE recently made a strategic investment in crypto exchange OKX to support tokenized stock and derivative products. Nasdaq received regulatory approval for tokenized stock trading and partnered with Kraken for global distribution, further cementing tokenization's place in mainstream finance.

New York Stock Exchange Group President Lynn Martin underscored the critical importance of maintaining integrity as new digital asset infrastructure is built. “As we explore how tokenization can enhance capital markets, it is crucial that new infrastructure is built to uphold the trust, transparency, and investor protection principles that markets demand,” she stated.

Separately, Securitize is pursuing a public offering through a joint venture with Cantor Equitize Partners. Industry observers expect these partnerships to positively impact Securitize's financial performance, reflecting deepening collaboration between traditional and digital finance.
