Japan’s Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan, and financial institutions are set to form a study group to examine a blockchain-based payment infrastructure for real-time settlement of stock and Japanese government bond trades. According to Channel News Asia, the group is expected to draw up a development plan as early as the beginning of 2027, covering both the blockchain design and how responsibilities would be allocated among participants. If the proposal wins approval, the system could begin operating in the early 2030s and also support international remittances. At present, stock trades in Japan are settled on a T+2 basis, while Japanese government bonds are settled on a T+1 basis. The plan points to a possible shift from the country’s current settlement timetable toward a faster framework built on blockchain infrastructure.
