Japan plans to provide another 150 billion yen, or about $944 million, to chip startup Rapidus as the government steps up support for the domestic foundry’s effort to compete with companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. According to the report, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is also expected to seek additional funding for Rapidus in the fiscal 2027 budget. Rapidus, a government-backed joint venture founded in 2022, is targeting production of advanced 2-nanometer chips by 2027. The company is also intended to help Japan reduce its dependence on TSMC.
