Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said recently that human-level artificial intelligence has already arrived, and he specifically pointed to OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra as having reached artificial general intelligence, or AGI. The comment adds to a debate that still lacks a shared definition across the industry.
Huang’s earlier remarks at the G20 were less definite. At that time, he said AGI could arrive within a few years, and even suggested that it may already exist today. He also questioned the usefulness of the term itself, saying its meaning can be broad or even meaningless depending on how it is defined.
The disagreement extends beyond rhetoric. An earlier OpenAI-Microsoft agreement had linked AGI to the ability to generate roughly $100 billion in profit, but a revised version in April 2026 removed that technical milestone trigger. Under the updated terms, OpenAI’s payments continue through 2030 regardless of technical progress. Other voices remain split as well: a Sequoia Capital partner wrote earlier this year that 2026 is AGI, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said current systems are still far from a “country of geniuses.” Cognitive scientist Gary Marcus remains skeptical, and investors are focusing less on labels than on how much human work these systems can reliably take over.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said recently that human-level artificial intelligence has already arrived, and he singled out OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra as having reached artificial general intelligence, or AGI.
His earlier comments at the G20 were more ambiguous. Huang said AGI could emerge within a few years, and even added that it may, in effect, already be here today. He also said the term can mean many things, or nothing at all, depending on how it is defined.
No common industry standard for AGI
The industry still has no shared definition of AGI or a settled threshold for when it has been achieved. An earlier cooperation agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft tied AGI to the ability to generate about $100 billion in profit. But a revised agreement in April 2026 removed that technical milestone trigger. Under the updated terms, OpenAI’s payments will continue through 2030 regardless of technical progress.
Other views remain far apart. A Sequoia Capital partner wrote earlier this year that “2026 is AGI.” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, by contrast, said current systems are still nowhere near the level of a “country of geniuses.”
Researchers and investors are watching different things
Cognitive scientist Gary Marcus has taken a skeptical view, arguing that any declaration that AGI has arrived is premature before it has actually been achieved.
Investors, for their part, appear to care less about the label itself and more about how much human work these systems can reliably take over.
