Ethereum’s ZK-EVM roadmap is facing sharp criticism from crypto researcher Justin Bons, who argues that the strategy could weaken the network instead of strengthening it. In his words, “Ethereum is in big trouble: The crowning jewel of ETH’s roadmap is a poison pill.” His core claim is that heavy reliance on zero-knowledge proofs introduces expensive hardware demands, slower practical performance, and a narrower group of operators capable of running key infrastructure.

Bons says the cost issue starts with proof generation. Building and operating the systems needed for ZK proofs requires arrays of high-end GPUs, with spending already rising above $100,000 for builders. He also argues that these costs scale linearly with demand, which means larger usage does not solve the problem. It raises the bill. That, in turn, may shift influence away from validators and toward a much smaller class of capital-heavy builders.

Proof generation costs sit at the center of the criticism

He points to a concrete example: producing a proof within 12 seconds would require 24 RTX 5090 GPUs, bringing the total close to $80,000. If Ethereum tried to push for higher speed, the requirement could rise to 64 GPUs, with costs moving beyond $200,000. Bons framed that as a direct decentralization problem, asking, “Does that sound decentralized to you?”

His concern is not limited to entry cost. A system that depends on a small number of well-funded builders can also face liveness issues if some of them drop out. The setup becomes harder to access and harder to keep broadly distributed. Short version: the bar is high. The longer version is worse, because future cryptographic requirements may push it even higher.

Bons adds that post-quantum cryptography could make the economics more difficult over the next 5–10 years. He says most ZK schemes in use today operate at an entropy level that is “not at all quantum-secure.” That raises a longer-term sustainability question for Ethereum if ZK-EVM remains the central path without an alternative in place.

Comparison with faster chains sharpens the performance debate

The argument also extends beyond hardware into market competition. Bons says Ethereum risks looking slow and over-engineered next to chains that already deliver low-cost, sub-second block performance. The article highlights Solana as one example, noting that it can process blocks in about 400 milliseconds while using significantly cheaper validator hardware.

That comparison puts pressure on Ethereum’s scaling narrative. If the network depends on increasingly expensive proof systems, it may struggle to match rivals on both throughput and speed within competitive timeframes. Bons sums up his view in blunt terms: “The path ETH has chosen is a losing one.” He argues Ethereum cannot compete on capacity within the timelines the market demands and cannot compete on speed at all.

Governance concerns add another layer to the roadmap dispute

Bons also ties the technical debate to governance. He writes, “We, the people, have no say in the matter… Ultimately, they still get to decide for everyone else.” In his framing, centralization is not only a hardware issue but also a decision-making issue, with major strategic direction shaped by a limited group rather than the broader community.

Taken together, his critique targets three linked pressures: engineering complexity, rising infrastructure costs, and concentrated governance. Ethereum remains one of the most widely used blockchain networks, but Bons argues that unless the community confronts these structural problems now, both decentralization and performance will keep facing strain.
