Ethereum researcher Justin Drake said the blockchain industry should begin calmly planning for a "bunker mode" scenario, arguing that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to private keys and ECDSA security before quantum computing becomes the more immediate problem. He suggested that users, especially large holders, consider an orderly migration of assets to fresh addresses where the public key remains hidden behind a hash.
Drake pointed to OpenAI’s recent release of 722 mathematical results as evidence that a period of mathematical superintelligence has arrived, saying long-standing assumptions once treated as unquestionable are now being overturned. At the same time, he noted that those 722 results showed a clear lack of major breakthroughs in cryptography.
He also recommended Project11’s "risk list" as a tool for tracking exposed Bitcoin public keys, and called on Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether to strengthen the security of their cold storage systems. On Ethereum’s side, Drake said the roadmap published on strawmap[.]org already adopts hash-based cryptography and end-to-end formal verification to address quantum threats, but added that those timelines now need to be revisited and accelerated.
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake said the blockchain industry should start calmly planning for a "bunker mode" scenario, urging an orderly migration of assets to new addresses where the public key is still hidden behind a hash. He said large holders may want to consider moving first.
Drake argued that AI’s potential impact on private keys and ECDSA security could arrive before the threat from quantum computing.
He pointed to OpenAI’s recent release of 722 mathematical results, saying they show that an era of mathematical superintelligence has already arrived. In his view, many assumptions that had long been treated as foundational and beyond doubt are now being overturned.
He also said the 722 results showed a clear shortage of breakthrough progress in cryptography.
As a practical resource, Drake recommended Project11’s "risk list" as a strong tool for tracking exposed Bitcoin public keys.
He also called on Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether to strengthen the security of their cold storage.
On Ethereum’s own response, Drake said the roadmap on strawmap[.]org fully adopts hash-based cryptography and end-to-end formal verification to address quantum threats. Given the arrival of mathematical superintelligence, he said those timelines now need to be revisited and accelerated.
Drake added that he will push to speed up the defensive effort as much as possible.
