Kabosu: The Original Dogecoin Meme
Kabosu, the Shiba Inu whose image became the iconic Doge meme and inspired Dogecoin (DOGE), passed away on June 24, 2026, at the age of 18. Her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced the news via her blog, stating that Kabosu died peacefully in her arms at 8:50 AM Taiwan time. A farewell ceremony is planned for Sunday at a flower shop in Narita, Chiba Prefecture. Sato noted that Kabosu ate normally the previous night but had quietly slipped away in her sleep. She thanked fans worldwide for their long-time support and affection.
Kabosu was rescued by Sato in 2008 from a breeding facility that had shut down. In October 2010, a photo of Kabosu was posted on Reddit, and by 2012 it had evolved into the global phenomenon known as the Doge meme. This meme indirectly gave birth to Dogecoin, which remains a major cryptocurrency today. Kabosu retained immense popularity within the crypto community. In 2018, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin visited Sato's apartment in Tokyo specifically to meet Kabosu.
Community Mourning and Market Reaction
Following the news of Kabosu's passing, Dogecoin's official X (formerly Twitter) account posted a tribute. Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, who had earlier called for prayers when Kabosu was seriously ill in 2022, also expressed his condolences. In 2022, Kabosu had been critically ill with acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, but miraculously recovered after about a week and regained her ability to eat and walk.
As of writing, Dogecoin experienced notable price volatility. The price briefly spiked to $0.1667 before falling back to $0.1581, representing a 24-hour decline of 5.1%. This event highlights the close link between meme culture and cryptocurrency markets.
Legacy in Meme Culture and the Crypto World
Kabosu's story is not just about an internet meme; it is a testament to how online culture can create real-world financial assets. Her smiling face inspired millions and became a symbol of decentralization and community spirit. Dogecoin's official tribute stated: "She changed the world. She will always be our star." Kabosu's passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to resonate in the crypto space and beyond.
