Kraken has launched regulated spot margin trading for eligible clients in the United States through Kraken Pro, giving users access to leveraged crypto spot trading inside a domestic regulatory framework. The service lets traders use existing holdings as collateral to open long or short positions, with leverage of up to 10x exposure. A feature long common on offshore venues is now available onshore under US oversight.
Kraken Pro Brings Margin Trading Into a US-Regulated Setup
The product operates through Kraken Derivatives US under the supervision of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Darius Tabatabai, Head of Kraken Pro, said margin is a core part of global crypto markets because it improves capital efficiency and supports a wider set of trading strategies, while US traders have had limited access to such functionality in a regulated environment.
That point matters. The launch is not just another product addition; it shows how US exchanges are trying to bring trading tools that were mostly concentrated offshore into compliant domestic market structure.
Bitnomial Deal Provided the Core Infrastructure
The rollout follows Payward’s acquisition of Bitnomial, a regulated derivatives exchange with brokerage and clearing capabilities. That transaction gave Kraken access to an integrated infrastructure stack built for digital asset derivatives.
According to the source material, Bitnomial spent years securing the approvals needed to operate as a regulated market participant in the United States. Kraken is now using that foundation to expand its trading suite. Spot margin is the first major product tied to the acquisition, and the company indicated that more releases may follow across its broader ecosystem.
Real-Time Risk Controls and Isolated Exposure
On the platform side, users can monitor liquidation prices, borrowing costs, and available margin in real time. Stop-loss functionality runs continuously, and risk is isolated to the collateral assigned to each position rather than the customer’s entire portfolio.
This isolated margin structure mirrors practices common in derivatives markets. In crypto, where sharp price moves can happen quickly, that design is central rather than optional. Leverage magnifies gains and losses at the same time, so risk controls sit at the center of how the product works.
Kraken Pushes Harder for Active US Traders
Kraken already offers spot trading, futures access through NinjaTrader, and institutional services. Adding regulated spot margin gives the exchange a broader package for professional and high-frequency traders in the US. Globally, margin trading has long been a standard feature on crypto venues, especially outside the United States.
The move also sharpens competition between exchanges. Platforms that can pair regulatory compliance with advanced execution tools, leverage access, and portfolio management features are in a stronger position to attract active traders.
US Regulation Is Shaping Product Design
The source notes that Kraken Derivatives US operates as a registered futures commission merchant, which means leverage, collateral arrangements, and customer protections are all structured within existing regulatory requirements. Compliance rules in the US have historically limited the availability of some crypto trading products compared with offshore jurisdictions.
Seen more broadly, the launch points to a change in US crypto infrastructure. Trading functions once concentrated offshore are being adapted to regulated domestic venues, bringing the market closer to traditional financial oversight models. Kraken also said spot margin is part of a wider expansion plan following the Bitnomial acquisition.
