LayerEdge has announced the launch of its Incentivized Testnet, a major milestone in its mission to build a Bitcoin-backed internet. The project extends Bitcoin's unparalleled security guarantees through a modular, trust-minimized verification architecture, leveraging zero-knowledge proofs and BitVM technology.

Impressive Devnet Results

Prior to the testnet release, LayerEdge's Devnet phase delivered remarkable outcomes: over 24,000 batches processed, more than 240,000 proofs verified, an estimated $2 million in cost savings, and the aggregation and security of 8+ protocols. These results underscore the transformative potential of shared verification and zero-knowledge proof aggregation.

Key Features of LayerEdge Testnet

LayerEdge leverages Bitcoin's security as a Babylon Bitcoin Secured Network (BSN), anchored by staked BTC, enabling a trustless and modular BitVM implementation. Core capabilities include efficient proof aggregation at scale, modular BitVM infrastructure, robust Bitcoin-backed security via Babylon, and universal verification systems. Currently, proofs from top protocols like Avail and Bitfinity are being aggregated and secured on Bitcoin Signet via LayerEdge, with many more protocols expected to join.

This testnet integrates RISC Zero's zkVM technology into its ZK proof aggregation platform, unlocking significant advantages in scalability, efficiency, and development flexibility. RISC Zero's advanced ZK Coprocessors and built-in GPU acceleration enable efficient off-chain computation, reducing gas costs dramatically while maintaining robust security. Composite and recursive circuits ensure rapid, scalable proof generation, allowing developers to benefit from mature toolchains and a Rust-based development environment.

The testnet also introduces an easier dashboard module for any user to generate a proof of any input and settle it to Bitcoin Signet in just a few clicks, building upon the Devnet's successful implementation of inscribing state transitions on a public Bitcoin Signet.

Light Node Verification and Incentives

LayerEdge Testnet allows any user to run a light node on top of the network to verify proofs at the leaf level before state transitions are settled on Bitcoin Signet, while earning rewards. The light node verification mechanism uses stochastic sampling of proofs, detailed in the project's whitepaper (available here).

Phased Rollout Plan

LayerEdge is rolling out the Testnet in two strategic phases: a Closed Testnet (already live) with a 6-day stress-testing period open to select participants, followed by a Public Beta fully open on January 28, 2025.

The implementation of trust-minimized verification on Bitcoin (BitVM-based) is still a work in progress. Therefore, the testnet does not yet implement Bitcoin verification for the final aggregated proof but supports settlement in the format of a cenotaph rune. This gradual feature rollout allows stress-testing and bug identification before moving to subsequent phases.

Developers and users are invited to join the testnet via dashboard.layeredge.io; an invite code is required, obtainable through activity in the LayerEdge Discord or from an existing member.
