LayerEdge has announced the launch of its incentivized testnet, marking a new step in its effort to build what it describes as a “Bitcoin-backed internet.” The rollout follows the project’s devnet phase, during which it reported processing more than 24,000 batches, verifying over 240,000 proofs, generating an estimated $2 million in cost savings, and securing and aggregating activity for more than eight protocols.
According to the project, the testnet is designed to extend Bitcoin’s security properties through a modular architecture focused on trust-minimized verification. LayerEdge says it leverages Bitcoin security through Babylon’s Bitcoin Secured Network model, anchored by staked BTC, while building toward a modular BitVM-based framework for proof aggregation and settlement.
Focus on Proof Aggregation and Bitcoin Security
At the core of LayerEdge’s design is the aggregation of zero-knowledge proofs at scale. The team says the network is intended to provide efficient proof aggregation, modular BitVM infrastructure, Bitcoin-backed security, and universal verification systems. The project added that proofs from protocols including Avail and Bitfinity are already being aggregated and secured on Bitcoin Signet via LayerEdge, with more integrations expected alongside the testnet rollout.
The broader pitch is that applications, rollups, and blockchains could benefit from Bitcoin-level settlement assurances without each system consuming full on-chain verification resources independently. In LayerEdge’s framing, shared verification and proof aggregation can reduce the amount of required blockspace and associated settlement costs while keeping Bitcoin as the ultimate security anchor.
RISC Zero zkVM Added to the Stack
A major technical update in the testnet is the integration of RISC Zero’s zkVM into LayerEdge’s proof aggregation platform. The company says this addition improves scalability, efficiency, and developer flexibility. By using RISC Zero’s ZK coprocessors and built-in GPU acceleration, LayerEdge aims to support more efficient off-chain computation, which it says can significantly reduce gas costs while preserving strong security assumptions.
LayerEdge also highlighted the benefits of RISC Zero’s composite and recursive circuits, which it says enable faster and more scalable proof generation. For developers, the integration also brings access to a more mature toolchain and a Rust-based development environment, potentially lowering the barrier to building proof-heavy applications and experimenting with trust-minimized systems tied to Bitcoin.
The project argues that these improvements position the network to aggregate zero-knowledge proofs efficiently and settle them to Bitcoin, opening the door for more scalable and trustless applications that derive security from the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Dashboard Access and Light Node Participation
LayerEdge says the testnet experience has been simplified on its dashboard, where users can generate proofs for inputs and settle them to Bitcoin Signet in just a few clicks. The company noted that this builds on devnet work involving the inscription of state transitions on a public Bitcoin Signet environment, now exposed through a more accessible user-facing module.
Another notable feature is support for running a light node on top of the network. Users can verify proofs at the leaf level during aggregation before the state transition is ultimately settled on Bitcoin Signet. In exchange, participants may earn rewards. LayerEdge said its light-node verification approach is based on stochastic sampling of proofs, and it referenced a public white paper describing that model in greater detail.
This light-node approach is part of the project’s broader attempt to distribute verification tasks while keeping the system lightweight enough for broader participation. If effective, it could help LayerEdge test whether proof verification responsibilities can be spread across a wider set of participants without undermining performance.
Two-Phase Rollout Plan
The testnet is being introduced in two phases. The first is a closed testnet, which is already live and includes a six-day stress-testing period for selected participants. The second phase is a public beta, which LayerEdge said is scheduled for January 28, 2025.
The phased approach appears intended to give the team time to test network performance, surface bugs, and evaluate system behavior under load before opening access more broadly. That is particularly relevant for a design that combines proof aggregation, off-chain computation, Bitcoin Signet settlement, and light-node verification incentives.
What the Testnet Does Not Yet Include
Despite the launch, LayerEdge acknowledged that a key part of its longer-term architecture remains unfinished. Specifically, trust-minimized verification on Bitcoin based on BitVM is still under development. As a result, the current testnet does not yet perform final aggregated proof verification directly on Bitcoin.
Instead, the system currently supports settlement of the final aggregated proof in the format of a cenotaph rune. The company described this as part of a gradual rollout strategy, allowing it to stress-test the network and identify issues before moving to later implementation stages. That caveat is important, because it means the testnet reflects only part of the full vision the project is presenting.
Project Positioning and Broader Ambition
LayerEdge describes itself as a decentralized network designed to enhance Bitcoin blockspace using ZK technology and BitVM. The team says its goal is to help every layer — including blockchains, rollups, and applications — settle on Bitcoin in a more efficient and trust-minimized way. According to the company, its architecture could enable systems to settle on Bitcoin using as little as 1% of the otherwise required blockspace and cost.
The longer-term roadmap includes a proof aggregation and verification layer, light clients for proof sampling, and what the team calls a Universal Validator Set (UVS). Together, these components are intended to support a broad ecosystem of Bitcoin-secured applications and rollups.
For now, the incentivized testnet gives developers and users a chance to interact with the system, participate in quests, run light nodes, and earn rewards in the form of LayerEdge Points. Access to the dashboard currently requires an invite code, which users can obtain through project community activity or from existing participants.
As with any early-stage infrastructure launch, the gap between technical vision and production-grade implementation remains significant. The current announcement provides a clearer picture of LayerEdge’s architecture and staged rollout, but major elements — especially full trust-minimized verification on Bitcoin — are still in progress. Since the source material is a project press release, the reported performance figures and product claims should be viewed in that context and assessed over time as the public beta and later phases unfold.
