Ledger co-founder David Balland has been rescued after being kidnapped in France, according to reporting from French outlet Le Parisien. The incident reportedly began on Tuesday in the small town of Vierzon, where Balland was abducted by what authorities described as a sophisticated criminal group that demanded a substantial ransom. France’s elite tactical police unit, the Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale (GIGN), led the operation that ended with Balland being found alive on Wednesday evening.
A two-day manhunt ends with Balland alive
The search for Balland lasted roughly two days before French authorities located and freed him. After the rescue, he was reportedly taken to a hospital for treatment. Other media reports said the kidnappers had sent a finger along with their ransom demand, underscoring the brutality of the case and the pressure placed on investigators during the operation.
Early confusion over the victim’s identity
In the early stages of the story, rumors incorrectly identified the hostage as fellow Ledger co-founder Éric Larchevêque. Larchevêque, a former CEO of Ledger, is a well-known French entrepreneur. Later reporting clarified that the person kidnapped was Balland. The confusion reflected the limited and fragmented information available while the rescue effort was still underway.
Several suspects detained as investigation continues
Authorities have already taken multiple suspects into custody, but the investigation remains active. Alain Mornay, mayor of Méreau, a town adjacent to Vierzon, said the situation appeared unusually serious and unlike anything he had previously seen in the area. For the crypto industry, the case is likely to renew concerns about the personal security of prominent founders and the growing risks linked to public wealth exposure.
