Libertyx announced on Monday that it has expanded its bitcoin purchasing network to 20,000 retail locations across the United States, including major chains such as 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy, and Rite Aid. Combined with its existing 5,000 debit-card-accepting ATMs, the company now claims a total of 25,000 locations across 45 states where consumers can buy bitcoin in person.
Founded in 2013, Libertyx describes itself as “America’s first and largest network of bitcoin ATMs, cashiers, and kiosks.” Its first bitcoin ATM was deployed in 2014. The new expansion moves the company beyond dedicated machines into everyday retail environments. According to the company's website, the cash-accepting locations fall into two categories: chain retailers (including approximately 9,340 7-Eleven stores, 9,900 CVS stores, and 2,464 Rite Aid stores) and independent retailers such as convenience stores, mobile phone repair shops, and check cashers.
Purchase Process and Fees
To buy bitcoin at these stores, users must download the Libertyx app and register for a free account. After entering a BTC address, tapping “Start purchase,” and selecting a participating retailer, the user taps “Add cash now.” The cash amount ranges from $20 to $500. The store clerk scans the barcode displayed on the user's phone, and Libertyx estimates that funds will be credited within 10 minutes. A retailer service fee of $4.95 applies per transaction. Once the funds appear in the account, the user can tap “Convert to bitcoin,” which may add a miner fee selected by the customer. To celebrate the nationwide launch, Libertyx is waiving conversion fees from select retailers through July 31.
Industry Impact and Limitations
“Bitcoin adoption has been limited by trust and accessibility,” said Libertyx CEO Chris Yim. “We want to expand our footprint so anyone can buy bitcoin at familiar locations they drive or walk by daily. Buying bitcoin is as easy as scanning a barcode while shopping for groceries.” It is important to note that these retail locations only accept cash; customers wishing to use a debit card must visit one of Libertyx’s ATMs. Additionally, due to unprecedented demand, some stores are currently on a waitlist. The move significantly lowers the barrier to entry for cryptocurrency, particularly benefiting unbanked individuals and those who prefer cash transactions.
