Magic Eden, a major NFT marketplace, is undergoing a significant strategic transformation. CEO Jack Lu announced on X that the company will streamline its operations to focus exclusively on the Solana blockchain and its crypto gambling platform, Dicey, while phasing out support for Bitcoin and Ethereum services. This pivot marks a shift from a multi-chain NFT marketplace to a verticalized, entertainment-focused ecosystem.
Timeline: Gradual Shutdown of Bitcoin and EVM Services
According to the official plan, Magic Eden will discontinue support for its EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) and Bitcoin marketplaces on March 9, 2026. Users are advised to transfer their assets before this date. Subsequently, the Bitcoin API will be terminated on March 27, and the Magic Eden Wallet will be fully shut down on April 1. This means Magic Eden will no longer facilitate trading of Bitcoin Ordinals, Runes, or Ethereum NFTs, effectively exiting these once-thriving segments of the NFT space.
Dicey: A New Growth Engine in Crypto Gambling
The centerpiece of Magic Eden's transformation is Dicey, a platform combining a crypto casino and sports betting. Jack Lu revealed that Dicey's closed beta has attracted approximately 200 users and accumulated over $15 million in total wagers within just two months. “We are incredibly bullish on how things have developed,” Lu stated. The company will deprioritize non-core activities such as NFT buybacks to reallocate resources toward Dicey's ecosystem design and future yield initiatives.
ME Token: Remaining as the Central Utility
Despite the pivot, the ME token will retain its core role, serving as the primary utility token across both Magic Eden and Dicey. It will be used for trading incentives, gambling activities, and ecosystem governance, ensuring synergy between the two platforms. Market analysts suggest this move aims to boost ME token's utility and liquidity through high-frequency gambling transactions.
Industry Impact and User Guidance
Magic Eden's retrenchment reflects the broader cooling of the NFT market after its 2021–2022 frenzy. Bitcoin and Ethereum NFT volumes have steadily declined, while Solana's low fees and high throughput make it attractive for gaming and gambling use cases. Users holding assets on Magic Eden wallet or its Bitcoin/Ethereum marketplaces are urged to withdraw or migrate before the respective deadlines to avoid losses.
