MARA Holdings transferred about 996 BTC, worth roughly $81.13 million, to an address identified as belonging to Galaxy Digital, according to data flagged by Lookonchain and cited by CoinDesk.
The on-chain move does not by itself confirm that Galaxy Digital executed a sale. What it does show is another notable transfer from a miner that has been reshaping both its balance sheet and its operating focus.
Bitcoin holdings fell from 53,822 BTC to 35,577 BTC
CoinDesk reported that MARA’s treasury stood at 53,822 BTC on Feb. 26, based on historical holdings data from Bitcoin Treasuries. By Aug. 7, that figure had dropped to 35,577 BTC.
That is a decline of 18,245 BTC across the period. CoinDesk said the reduction came as the company cut debt and expanded into artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.
MARA had previously been focused solely on bitcoin mining. It has since broadened its strategy, adding AI and high-performance computing infrastructure to the business.
March sale raised about $1.1 billion
CoinDesk said MARA has already been selling part of its large bitcoin treasury to strengthen its balance sheet and support that broader strategy. In March, the company sold 15,133 BTC for approximately $1.1 billion.
The report said those proceeds were used primarily to fund the repurchase of convertible debt. Against that backdrop, the latest 996 BTC transfer to Galaxy Digital fits into a longer stretch of treasury reduction, even though the transfer alone does not prove the coins were sold.
Shares gained in pre-market trading
CoinDesk also reported that MARA shares were up 2% in pre-market trading Friday to $10. Over the previous 24 hours, bitcoin had recovered to above $82,000.
