Meta has invested roughly $3.5 billion for a minority stake in EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, in a move that strengthens its long-term push into AI-powered smart glasses. The deal gives Meta a holding of just under 3% in the company, which owns Ray-Ban and already plays a central role in Meta’s wearable hardware ambitions.
Building on an Existing Partnership
The investment expands a relationship that has already produced commercial products. Meta and EssilorLuxottica launched Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2021, and the new stake suggests the partnership is moving beyond product collaboration into a deeper strategic alignment. According to the report, Meta is also considering increasing its holding over time to around 5%, using EssilorLuxottica’s manufacturing capabilities and distribution reach to support future hardware development.
A Bigger Bet on AI Wearables
Analysts view the investment as both a vote of confidence in EssilorLuxottica and a clear signal that Meta sees smart glasses as an important entry point for consumer AI. By working more closely with an established eyewear giant, Meta can combine software and AI ambitions with proven design, manufacturing, and retail channels. The move also aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader focus on AI and his vision of making smart glasses part of everyday life.
Smart Glasses Market Gains Momentum
The report notes that the smart glasses market is expected to expand significantly in the coming years, with total market size projected to reach $8.26 billion by 2030. Against that backdrop, Meta’s equity investment appears aimed at securing stronger access to supply chains and hardware expertise while positioning itself more aggressively in what many see as a future computing platform.
