Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has officially launched Meta AI, its new artificial intelligence assistant designed to compete with established chatbot products such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other emerging offerings in the fast-moving generative AI market. The company said users will be able to interact with Meta AI inside WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Direct, including in group chats. In addition to Meta’s own model capabilities, the assistant can draw on broader and more current information through a partnership involving Microsoft and Bing Search. Meta also said the assistant will support more than text answers. Users can prompt Meta AI to generate images through Emu, the company’s new image generation model that has been integrated directly into the chatbot experience. Alongside Meta AI, the company introduced a set of more specialized chatbot “personas” designed around specific interests and use cases such as cooking, travel, and editing. Meta said the beta rollout of Meta AI began on September 27 for a limited group of users in the United States across Facebook Messenger, Instagram Direct, and WhatsApp. The company also plans to integrate the assistant into its smart glasses and the Quest 3 mixed reality headset the following month. That move indicates Meta sees AI as a cross-device capability rather than just a feature inside mobile apps.
The hardware integration could prove important. By placing Meta AI into wearables and immersive devices, Meta is extending its assistant strategy beyond messaging and into voice, visual, and real-time interactive environments. That may help the company build tighter links between AI services and its longer-term ambitions in augmented and virtual reality.
