MoneyGram has officially joined Solana's Developer Platform and is now running as an active validator on the network. According to the company's official X announcement on June 22, the remittance firm is not only integrating Solana's infrastructure but also taking part in transaction processing and validation.
The development stands out because Western Union had already moved to Solana earlier this year. With the two largest money transfer companies now operating on the same blockchain, the story is no longer about a single partnership. It points to a broader shift in remittance infrastructure toward on-chain settlement.
MoneyGram Connects a Large Cash Network to Solana
MoneyGram serves more than 60 million customers and operates through nearly 500,000 retail locations across 200+ countries. Those outlets include cash pickup points in pharmacies, convenience stores, and post offices. Through Solana's Developer Platform, the company gets a single API gateway to issue stablecoins on-chain, tools for cash-to-digital-dollar conversion, token extension features, and direct access to Solana's stablecoin settlement rails.
This is not being framed as a pilot. MoneyGram is already live as a validator, which means it is participating in the network's real-time operation rather than limiting its role to a commercial integration.
Stablecoin Transfer Volumes Help Explain the Choice
The article ties both companies' decision to usage data on Solana. Last week, the network processed 22.7 million USDC transactions, equal to 31.8% of all USDC transfers across blockchains. It has held the top position for seven straight weeks.
Retail peer-to-peer stablecoin activity on Solana reached $803.1 million across 1.38 million transactions in the same period, the second-highest weekly reading on record. Weekly salary payments made through stablecoins also exceeded $1.6 billion, close to a record level. In the source material, these figures are presented as evidence of practical payment use rather than purely speculative trading.
Validator Status Deepens the Commitment
MoneyGram's validator role carries weight beyond a standard infrastructure deal. Validators earn network rewards and help support decentralization and network stability. That puts the company in a more involved position inside the ecosystem.
The next data point to watch is whether MoneyGram discloses stablecoin transfer volume routed through Solana. If that happens, it would offer a clearer measure of how much traditional remittance activity is actually moving on-chain. For now, with both Western Union and MoneyGram live on Solana, the connection between global remittance services and blockchain payment rails is becoming harder to ignore.
