MongoDB chief executive Chirantan "CJ" Desai resigned at 8:30 a.m. yesterday and is set to join Meta, triggering a sharp selloff in MongoDB shares and wiping more than $6 billion from the company’s market value within eight hours. Nasdaq-listed MDB fell from $401 to $360 by 8:31 a.m., erasing roughly $3 billion in market capitalization in about a minute. By the New York close, the stock was down 18.5% on the day. The resignation came one day before MongoDB’s Investor Day in New York, adding pressure ahead of a closely watched company event. Wall Street firms including Bank of America, William Blair, DA Davidson, Needham, and Stifel responded with negative commentary, describing the move as clearly negative, disappointing, and poorly timed. Desai’s jump to Meta also meant giving up a large package of unvested compensation at MongoDB, including a $2.5 million cash bonus plan, $15 million in restricted stock, a $17.5 million performance-based award, and additional unvested annual equity granted in March 2026.

MongoDB’s Nasdaq-listed common stock, MDB, fell almost immediately after the news. The shares dropped from $401 to $360 by 8:31 a.m., cutting about $3 billion from the company’s value in roughly 60 seconds. By 4 p.m. in New York, the stock had fallen 18.5% for the day and was worth more than $6 billion less than at the previous close.

Desai’s departure came one day before MongoDB’s Investor Day, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. today in New York. What had already been a closely watched event is now drawing attention for a different reason.

Wall Street analysts quickly updated their views on MDB. Bank of America analysts wrote that the resignation was "clearly negative" and that it "complicates the setup." William Blair said the news "creates more questions than answers." DA Davidson called it "very disappointing" to see the CEO leave. Needham described the timing as "unfortunate." Stifel wrote, "There is no positive spin to this situation."

Meta appoints Desai to a new enterprise AI role

At Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg welcomed the hire. He said, "I’m excited that Chirantan ‘CJ’ Desai will join Meta as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to me." Desai’s work at Meta will focus on bringing the company’s AI technology to business customers.

Desai walked away from unvested pay at MongoDB

By leaving MongoDB, Desai gave up multiple pieces of compensation that had not yet vested. His November 2025 sign-on package included a $2.5 million cash bonus paid in two tranches and $15 million in restricted stock.

That stock award covered 44,096 shares and was set to vest in eight quarterly installments over two years. Tax-withholding filings dated April 1 and July 1 show that only two installments had vested. The remaining six installments expired as soon as he resigned, representing $11.25 million at grant value.

Desai also gave up additional performance-based stock compensation. One award, valued at $17.5 million, required MDB’s 60-day average closing price to reach at least $375 per share. Higher thresholds at $400, $475, and $600 would have unlocked larger tranches.

The first tranche would have vested on January 1, 2027, as long as Desai remained employed through that date. MongoDB’s latest quarterly report said the stock had already cleared that first hurdle, leaving 51,445 units outstanding. Even so, Desai resigned about three months before that vesting date.

His annual equity grant from March 2026, which covered 34,832 shares, left another 32,655 stock units unvested. The second $1.25 million cash tranche, due in November 2026 after one year of service, will also never be paid.

Estimated forfeited compensation was about $25 million, with upside beyond that

A software commentator estimated that the compensation Desai abandoned was worth about $25 million. The report added that the total amount forfeited could have been tens of millions of dollars higher depending on MDB’s long-term share price and the value of the stock on future vesting dates.

MongoDB’s Investor Day is set for 11 a.m. today in New York, where investors will be watching for the company’s response after the leadership change and share-price drop.
