Elon Musk said that a limited external beta of X Money could go live within one to two months, adding a concrete timeline to X’s long-running push into payments. The product is already being tested internally, and Musk framed it as more than a simple wallet or transfer feature. In his view, X Money is meant to become a central hub for financial activity inside the X ecosystem, supporting the company’s broader ambition to build a Western-style super app.
Fiat payments come first, crypto remains on the roadmap
At launch, X Money is expected to focus on fiat transactions rather than digital assets. Musk said the service will work with Visa to enable instant transfers, signaling that X is starting with established payment rails before expanding into more complex financial services. X Payments LLC has also secured money services licenses in multiple U.S. states, an important step for regulatory compliance as the company builds out its payments business.
For the crypto market, the biggest question is whether X Money will eventually support digital assets. Musk has previously said that crypto is not part of the immediate plan for X payments, but he has not shut the door on future integration. Because of his long-standing public support for Dogecoin (DOGE), many market watchers believe DOGE would be among the most likely candidates if crypto functionality is later added.
A payments play backed by X’s scale
Musk also highlighted X’s user base, saying the platform has more than 1 billion installs and around 600 million monthly active users. If X Money gains traction across even part of that audience, it could become a meaningful force in digital payments. X already combines social media, news distribution, and the Grok AI assistant, and payments would add another major layer to the company’s effort to keep users inside a single app throughout the day.
The strategy also fits Musk’s long-term interest in financial services. He co-founded X.com in 1999, a business that later became part of PayPal. With X Money, he appears to be revisiting that original vision through a much larger consumer platform.
AI and finance are being built in parallel
In the same remarks, Musk said xAI is adding 220,000 GPUs at its Macroharder data center in Memphis, Tennessee, to train more advanced AI models. He argued that large-scale compute is essential for building the strongest AI systems.
That parallel investment highlights X’s two-track strategy. AI products like Grok can deepen engagement and increase time spent on the platform, while X Money could open new transaction-based revenue streams. For crypto users, direct integration is still not confirmed, but the launch timeline and platform scale make X Money a development worth watching closely.
