This week, several decentralized finance protocols managing nearly $1 billion in combined assets announced they are moving their cross-chain infrastructure from Layerzero to Chainlink CCIP, marking a decisive shift toward more secure bridging standards in the wake of a catastrophic exploit.
Solv Protocol Migrates $700M in Tokenized Bitcoin
Solv Protocol led the charge, migrating its entire tokenized bitcoin portfolio — including SolvBTC and xSolvBTC — from Layerzero to Chainlink CCIP. The move covers approximately $700 million in assets across deployments on Corn, Berachain, Rootstock, and TAC networks. The team stated that after an extensive security review, it is deprecating all Layerzero bridges and transitioning to Chainlink CCIP as the official cross-chain solution across all supported chains.
Re Protocol Selects CCIP as Exclusive reUSD Infrastructure
Re (re.xyz), an onchain reinsurance protocol, followed suit, choosing Chainlink CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure for reUSD, its yield-bearing stablecoin with a market cap exceeding $160 million and protocol TVL above $475 million. Re cited CCIP's redundant validation by 16+ independent node operators, native rate-limit circuit breakers, and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance as decisive factors.
The KelpDAO Exploit That Triggered the Exodus
The immediate catalyst was an exploit on April 18, 2026, that drained approximately 116,500 rsETH — worth roughly $292 million at the time — from a Layerzero-powered bridge used by KelpDAO. Attackers reportedly used the stolen assets as collateral on Aave v3. KelpDAO attributed the breach to a 1-of-1 verifier configuration within Layerzero's infrastructure, calling it a single point of failure. Layerzero disputed this, arguing that KelpDAO had manually selected a non-recommended single-verifier model against its guidance and that it would no longer support such configurations. The public dispute drew renewed scrutiny to Layerzero's Omnichain Fungible Token standard and default security practices.
Why Chainlink CCIP Gains Favor
Chainlink CCIP employs a fundamentally different model: each bridge lane relies on multiple independent decentralized oracle networks, with 16 or more security-reviewed node operators handling validation. Separate codebases manage execution and risk, and built-in rate limits act as circuit breakers if anomalous transfer volumes appear. Solv noted that CCIP was already part of its collateral verification stack, making the migration a consolidation rather than a full replacement. Re described the switch as an obvious upgrade given Chainlink's foundational role in its infrastructure, prioritizing track record, third-party audits, and institutional security standards over speed or cost.
Broader Trend: Default Security Trumping Flexibility
Huma Finance, a PayFi network, also selected CCIP as the exclusive bridge for its PST yield product, though it was not migrating from a live Layerzero deployment — its decision was forward-looking, based on the same security reviews. Combined, these shifts represent nearly $1 billion in assets moving to CCIP, strengthening Chainlink's position as the preferred cross-chain standard for protocols handling institutional-grade assets. Chainlink founder Sergey Nazarov remarked: “We have seen the trend of low quality data oracles with poor security being switched out for Chainlink for many years now, with that trend continuing on a regular basis.”
Users holding rsETH, SolvBTC, xSolvBTC, and reUSD are largely unaffected during the phased migrations. The trend reflects a pragmatic calculation by DeFi teams: when a single misconfiguration can result in a nine-figure loss, default security architecture matters more than flexibility.
