Netflix has released the trailer for an eight-episode series about the events leading up to the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, with the story centered on former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and former Alameda Research chief Caroline Ellison. In a Thursday post on X, the streaming platform said the show will debut on Nov. 19 and described it as a story about "the love scorned prodigies behind the FTX scandal." Anthony Boyle plays Bankman-Fried, while Julia Garner portrays Ellison.
The trailer points to the idea that "going all-in every time is the mathematically optimal strategy," a line that appears to reference the risky use of customer funds tied to the exchange. It also includes Ellison saying, "Lying isn’t bad for a good cause," echoing testimony she gave during Bankman-Fried’s 2023 criminal trial. At that trial, Ellison said Bankman-Fried believed rules against lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to effective altruism, a philosophy focused on doing the most good possible, including through earning money to donate to charity.
After FTX collapsed and entered bankruptcy, Bankman-Fried, Ellison and others linked to FTX and Alameda were indicted in December 2022. Ellison accepted a plea deal and testified against him, while Bankman-Fried went to trial. He was convicted on seven fraud-related felony counts and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The report said he remained in federal prison, while Ellison was released from federal custody in January.

The trailer appears to lean on the idea that “going all-in every time is the mathematically optimal strategy,” a line that likely points to the high-risk investments made with user funds at the crypto exchange.
In one scene, Garner as Ellison says, “Lying isn’t bad for a good cause.” The line echoes Ellison’s testimony during Bankman-Fried’s 2023 criminal trial, when she said he believed rules against lying and stealing did not necessarily apply to effective altruism.
That philosophy centers on doing the greatest amount of good possible, including through “earning to give,” the practice of building wealth in order to donate it to charitable causes.
