Shenzhen-based AI hardware startup NOOKLAB has completed several funding rounds backed by investors including Sequoia China and Linear Capital, with total financing reaching several hundred million yuan and a valuation close to $100 million, according to a BlockBeats report citing Beating AI. Two of those rounds were completed earlier this year, when founder Zhao Yue had left ByteDance only about three months earlier and the company had not yet released a product. NOOKLAB’s first device, Moonphase Flip, is an AI-powered e-ink screen that magnetically attaches to the back of a smartphone. The company says the device weighs 54 grams, is 4.65 millimeters thick, includes six microphones, and offers battery life of more than two days. After recording is turned on, the AI is designed to extract schedules, commitments, and to-do items from conversations and display them directly on the rear screen, allowing users to check notes without opening an app. The company also plans to connect the product with calendars and past conversations so it can prepare meeting materials, generate meeting summaries, and draft follow-up emails. Moonphase Flip is expected to begin small-batch sales in December. The report noted that there is still no independent hands-on testing, and whether the AI can accurately identify commitments and complete follow-up tasks remains unverified.

Shenzhen-based AI hardware company NOOKLAB has completed several funding rounds, with investors including Sequoia China and Linear Capital. Its total financing has reached several hundred million yuan, and its valuation is close to $100 million.

BlockBeats, citing Beating AI, reported that two of the rounds were concentrated in the early part of this year. At that point, founder Zhao Yue had left ByteDance only about three months earlier, and the company had not yet launched a product.

First product is a magnetic AI e-ink screen for smartphones

NOOKLAB’s first product, Moonphase Flip, is an AI e-ink screen that attaches magnetically to the back of a phone. According to the company, the device weighs 54 grams, is 4.65 millimeters thick, comes with six microphones, and has battery life of more than two days.

Once recording is turned on, the AI can extract schedules, commitments, and to-do items from conversations and show them directly on the rear screen. Users can check the information by flipping over the phone instead of opening an app to search through records.

Calendar and conversation history are part of the plan

The company said it also plans to combine calendar data and past conversations so the device can prepare meeting materials in advance, generate meeting summaries, and draft follow-up emails.

Moonphase Flip is expected to begin small-batch sales in December. There is still no independent hands-on testing available.

Similar products already exist

Comparable products have already appeared on the market. Flowtica’s Verso also combines recording functions with an e-ink screen, but it weighs 98 grams. Moonphase Flip is positioned around being lighter, thinner, and less disruptive in terms of notifications.

Whether the AI can accurately identify a user’s commitments and complete follow-up tasks still needs to be tested in real-world use.
