ChainCatcher, citing Nikkei's Chinese-language edition on Sept. 3, said demand tied to Nvidia's AI servers is helping push DRAM prices higher at a faster pace. Prices of general-purpose DRAM products used in personal computers and other devices rose 5% month on month, while products for industrial equipment notched double-digit gains. Memory manufacturers are prioritizing supply of memory dedicated to AI servers, and the knock-on effect is still spreading throughout the market. DRAM serves as temporary data storage not only in PCs, cameras and smartphones but also in AI servers and other equipment in data centers. In bulk transactions, memory manufacturers are the sellers while equipment makers and module makers are the buyers; prices are settled through monthly or quarterly negotiations. For the mainstream 16Gb DDR5 module used in PCs, game consoles and servers, the July bulk price was fixed at about $40.20, up 5% from the prior month. That put the product on track for a seventh straight monthly gain. An executive at an electronics trading house said the price had already marked a record high.
