Reflection, an AI startup backed by Nvidia, is preparing to release its first open-source model, according to a BlockBeats brief citing Axios. People familiar with the matter told Axios the model is still expected to trail the strongest closed-source systems in the United States. Even so, it has reportedly reached a level where it can compete with leading open-source models from China. The company has spent heavily to get there. Reflection raised $2 billion last year. This year, it secured large-scale computing capacity in a series of moves, including contracts with SpaceX worth up to about $6.3 billion in total. It later bought more than $1 billion in compute from Nebius. Reflection plans to package the model, deployment software and computing power into an "AI factory" offering. The target users are enterprises and government clients that want to train and deploy private AI systems with their own data.

Axios, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the model is still expected to lag behind the strongest closed-source AI models in the United States. Even so, it has reportedly reached a point where it can compete with leading open-source models from China. Reflection has spent heavily on that push.

Funding and compute spending

The company raised $2 billion last year. This year, it locked in large-scale compute capacity through a series of deals, including contracts with SpaceX worth up to about $6.3 billion in total. It then purchased more than $1 billion in compute from Nebius.

AI factory plan

Reflection plans to bundle the model, deployment software and computing power into an "AI factory" product. The company wants enterprises and government clients to use their own data to train and deploy private AI systems.
