NYDIG’s global head of research, Greg Cipolaro, has suggested that a roughly $1.3 billion sale of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) shares last week was likely a large directional holder exiting their position. The transaction was executed below the market price, with the seller giving up millions of dollars in potential gains to achieve immediate execution.

According to Cipolaro, such behavior—prioritizing speed over price—is inconsistent with typical retail or market-making activity and strongly indicates that an investor with a significant directional bet is closing out. He added that giving up millions of dollars for instant execution suggests the whale had built a large directional position and opted to exit decisively. As the world’s largest spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT often serves as a bellwether for institutional crypto flows, making this exit a key signal for market participants monitoring shifts in longer-term conviction.
